Reredos

Wood: Carved Butternut
Carved by Victor J. Miller February 12, 1960 and additional panel.August 13, 1964
The design for this reredos was inspired by the one at the High Altar in Chichester Cathedral, England; and in its embodiment of the Four Evangelists, is very characteristic of the usage of late Norman architecture, upon which Calvary Church is modeled

There are few surviving examples of reredoses from the medieval period because most of them were ruthlessly destroyed during the period of puritanical rebellion. But we know from those that have survived, as well as from written records, that they were highly carved and polychromed; that they showed forth all the artistic talents of the woodcarver, and that, with reference to the whole churchbuilding, they were meant to be seen like a jewel in a setting.

Four Evangelists

The figures of the Four Evangelists were carved in 1959 in Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany by Georg Johann Lang, son the late Anton Lang who for so many years was the Christus in the famed Passion Play.
