Professional architects working in important cities produced the first American buildings in the Greek Revival style. These structures, based on carefully researched Greek architectural precedents, included governmental and commercial buildings, schools, churches, and elegant mansions. From these beginnings in early nineteenth century, the style spread through American society. In 1825, after fire destroyed one-third of New York City, its citizens rebuilt in the Greek Revival style
