THE EDWARD H. STICHEL WINDOWS
"St. John's Grace Episcopal Church: A Guide to Some of the Memorials"
By Rector Peter Bridgford[This pair of stained glass windows are] the traditional "Guardian Angels" of church entrances.
On the left St. Gabriel is shown with his trumpet by which he was known as the announcer of the beginning of things, i.e. the Annunciation to Mary and the Last Day of Judgment. Being closely associated with Mary, Gabriel is symbolized by the crescent moon at the very top of the window and he wears a medallion on his breast. Mary's color is blue and so Gabriel is garbed here in predominant blues.
The balancing window of St. Michael is in strong orange and red with a minimum of blue. The orb of the sun is over his head as a balance to the moon over Gabriel. Michael bears the sword of righteousness which is combined with scales for the weighing of souls at the Day of Judgment. You may discern a subdued dragon under his foot reminding us of his role in the Book of Revelation 12:7 when he throws the great dragon, called the Devil and Satan, down to earth.
Designed by Lamb Studios, these windows were dedicated in memory of Edward H. Stichel as a request in the will of his wife, Katherine, who was the church school superintendent for many years. G. Clare Backhurst, Rector of St. John's and first Rector of St. John's Grace, 1959-74, officiated the dedication on January 24, 1968.
