South transept.
The transept ceilings were repainted about 1952 when the Greek Orthodox congregation
bought the building. The transept ceiling escaped serious soot damage because it
was coated with aged, dark, yellow varnish that protected it. In 2002, the restorers
removed the old varnish, repaired the paint and then applied a new coat of varnish.
That project took more than three weeks.
