Christ Knocking at the Door This window is dedicated to the memory of William Fargo (1818-1881), co-founder of the Wells Fargo Company and former mayor of Buffalo, Fargo was also a founder and vestry member of Christ Church in Buffalo, His family contributed the window, based on a 1853 painting by William Holman Hunt and produced in 1888 by W Gibson's Sons of New York City. Christ stands at a door holding a lantern and wearing a victory crown of laurel leaves. Grapes beside the door, a chalice above, and the wafer and sheaf of wheat all symbolize the EucharisL The Lamb of God and the pelican represent Christ's sacrifice, The All-seeing Eye of God sends its rays toward earth and the child seraph is most likely the image of one of the five Fargo children who died in childhood. |
