In 1883 Dexter
Rumsey purchased the house and gave the the use of the
house as a wedding gift for his daughter, Mary Grace, upon her marriage to Ansley
Wilcox, a young Buffalo lawyer.
Rumsey had given another house, 675 Delaware Avenue, as a similar wedding present
to his daughter Cornelia who had married Wilcox in 1878. When Cornelia died, Wilcox
married her younger sister, Mary Grace
