Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-94), the father of the great choral style, is shown holding one of his greatest works, the "Missa Papae Marcelli."  He is credited with preventing the Council of Trent (1562-3) from abolishing polyphony in church, thus gaining  the reputation as the "savior of church music."
