Contract for the granite secured 1896.

$716,000 contract officially awarded to John Pierce of NY, sublet the work to the Bodwell Granite Co. Vinalhaven Maine. Stone for the four story building with a 250' tower to be cut from the Bodwell Granite Co. quarry at Jonesboro

A new $3,000 cutting shed erected at the Sands quarry at Vinalhaven
First granite arrived at Vinalhaven by schooner December 1, 1896 - 120 cutters went to work

"Happy" Don McCarthy was named government inspector of the Post Office.

Robert White, carver, spent the equivalent of "150 days work" carving the large eagle for the post office (at this time a days work was a 9 hr. day).

E. Russell was in charge of the quarry at Jonesboro.

The last of the GRANITE EAGLES for the post office were completed in 1898.
