18.jpgIn 1887, Charles Brent, curate at St. Paul's Cathedral, was given responsibility for St. Andrew's Mission, a few blocks east of St. Paul's.

Under Brent's guidance, St. Andrew's began its High Church tradition, which included six office lights (candles),Eucharist every Sunday at 7:30 am, and use of the chasuble at the service.

Less than a year after his appointment to St. Andrew's, Brent left the Diocese, under pressure from those who were opposed to such "innovations."

After several years in Boston, working in an inner city mission, Brent was elected Bishop of the Philippines in 1901. Later he became Chaplain to the Allied Expeditionary Force during World War 1.

He was elected Bishop of Western New York in 1917. During his time as Bishop here, St. Andrew's moved to its present location from downtown, and the present building was dedicated in Honor of the Ministry of Charles Henry Brent,

He was often present at Christmas Eve Services at St. Andrew's when he was in the Diocese, preferring to be here rather than at the Cathedral.

He died in March, 1929, in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he was on his way to the Mediterranean for rest and recuperation from illness. His tomb is in Lausanne. His Feast Day is March 27
