Today's City Hall occupies the site of Samuel Wilkeson's residence. He became mayor of Buffalo in 1836.

He had been present when Buffalo was burned and later became the leader of the effort to construct a Buffalo Harbor and have Buffalo made the western terminal of the
Erie Canal instead of Black Rock.

Wilkeson was called the builder of Buffalo. His columned classical residence, built in 1823, was not demolished for the City Hall, but for a gas station built on the site in 1915.
