Crédence: A serving table and sideboard of the French Gothic period.

It was a chest mounted mounted on a stand, or a display cabinet for plates, or for preparing and carving meats.

Origin probably religious, from credere, to believe. May have evolved from a church piece.

Used as a side table. Usually made of oak.

Prevalent in northern Europe, it evolved into the buffet-sideboard type.

Credenza: the Italian form of crédence
