J. Edward Nash House, 36 Nash Street (renamed for Rev. Nash in 1953)
Rev. Nash was pastor of the Michigan
Avenue Baptist Church (to the right of Nash
House in photo) from 1892 until 1953.
Status: Buffalo landmark
"He [along with Mary
Talbert] helped
organize the Niagara Movement, the forerunner to the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People. He carried a national reputation ...
"So a few years ago, when [Kevin] Cotrell, George K.] Arthur and other members
of the Michigan Street Preservation Corp. entered the old Nash residence at 36 Nash
St., it was like walking into a time capsule.
"Nash's study had remained relatively undisturbed since his death in 1957, Inside
they found a treasure trove of old books and photos. They found his sermons and speeches,
which virtually tell the story of Buffalo's black history.
"The home ... is destined to become a museum and research library upon completion
of restoration."
