Wood: Carved Butternut There are few surviving examples of reredoses from the medieval period because most of them were ruthlessly destroyed during the period of puritanical rebellion. But we know from those that have survived, as well as from written records, that they were highly carved and polychromed; that they showed forth all the artistic talents of the woodcarver, and that, with reference to the whole churchbuilding, they were meant to be seen like a jewel in a setting.
