Metropolitan Museum of Art: Egyptian palmette capital
On display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City (Home Page) in 2004
Circa. A.D.41-68
Sandstone from PhilaeThis capital shows the stylized palmette pattern. The plants are arranged in two tours of different sizes. The overhanging upper lip was knocked off when the capital was reused.
The palmette pattern - once brightly painted - coves the unstructured bell-shaped core like a dense net. This surface treatment is a typical stylistic feature of the architecture of the period.
