The king was captured in 1250 and was a prisoner for four years.
in Syria. He was freed when a large ransom was paid. During
the Crusade, he mother died.

In the Holy Land, Louis bought
what was believed to be Jesus' crown of thorns and some fragments of
the cross upon which He was crucified. To display the relics, he built
Sainte Chapelle next to his palace in Paris in 1245.
