It seems likely that the north wing of the building is older than the larger Gothic main block of the house. Its proportions, its basically symmetrical three-bay western facade (which may have been the original front of the building) suggests that the north wing is a late Federal house of the type frequently seen in western New York and possibly dating from the 1830s or 1840s.

The roof of the north wing extends down to shelter the stuccoed addition, giving the north wing a "salt box" silhouette.
