Ladder-back chairs
Also known as slat-back chairs

A chair back which resembles a multirung ladder.

A series of horizontal rails is contained by the two vertical chair-back stiles, replacing the usual vertical splat.

Often used in country furniture.

Slat-back chairs, also known as ladder-backs, were first introduced in the 17th century. During the 18th century, they became lighter in proportions. Used throughout the Colonies.
