Scajaquada Heritage Area
The Scajaquada Creek corridor is immersed in history: as a nerve center for Native Americans, a battle zone in the War of 1812, the final stop for slaves seeking escape to Canada and the backdrop of a little--known crusade for Irish independence.And under a new state law, it is the third location in Buffalo to be designated as a State Heritage Area.
On Sept. 26, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the bill to create a Scajaquada Heritage Area. The law calls for a commission to create a management plan for the area that will require approval by the state’s Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. If approved, project applicants will receive state grants from the state’s Environmental Protection Fund.
