The Stairway to Heaven Dome

Because of the great technical ability needed to erect a dome. domes are much prized as great works of architecture.

Lombard architecture was strongly influenced by Byzantine art, especially domes (
cupolas) which were usually circular on the outside. When the Lombard builders adopted them, they enclosed their domes in an octagonal box with slanted roofs.

Often, like the great builders of the East, they cut numerous windows into the lower part of the dome for light and warmth.

Buffalo-born artist Joseph Mazur painted the entire dome on canvas which was attached to the dome in 1926-27. His wife, Stefa, posed for some of the figures.

In the two cycles of figures, there are 118 full-Iength ones, 11 cherubs, 9 large circular symbols, and 70 additional symbols.
